The Capon Valley Ruritan Club is a community service organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Capon Valley area.

Activities such as our dinners, annual July 4th Celebration, Capon Valley 5k Run and One-Mile Fun Walk, and Christmas Bazaar provide area residents with a great opportunity to meet their neighbors and have a good time.

The club meets at 7PM on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Ruritan Park in Yellow Spring, WV.  Dinner is served. Visitors are welcome. The Board of Directors meets at 7PM on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Ruritan Park. Residents of the Capon Valley area may present requests for Club support for Community projects or petitions for financial assistance at these meetings.

Kenneth Seldon Passes away

 

Kenneth Elwood Seldon, 95, of Yellow Spring, WV died on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at E.A. Hawse Nursing and Rehab Center in Baker, WV.

Mr. Seldon was born on February 7, 1916 in High View, WV, a son of the late Frederick J. and Dora Gill Seldon. He was a World War II veteran in the United States Navy. He owned and operated Riverside Service in Yellow Spring, WV for 60 years.

He was a member of the Timber Ridge United Church of Christ near High View, WV where he was a former Deacon. He was a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, a member of the Yellow Spring Hunt Club, and a former member of the Wardensville Lions Club. In addition he was a charter member of the Capon Valley Ruritan Club in Yellow Spring, WV where he received the Tom Downing Award. He was nominated twice for the Knights of Olde Hampshire. He was honored by having a bridge named after him, the "Kenneth Seldon Bridge" in Yellow Spring, WV.

Mr. Seldon married Emily Cooper Seldon on July 29, 1940 in Gainesboro, VA. Mrs. Seldon died on February 22, 1989.

Surviving is his special companion: Josephine "Toots" Whitacre of Gore, VA; two daughters: Karen Seldon of Alexandria, VA; Fay Seldon of Wardensville, WV; daughter-in-law: Peggy Seldon of Yellow Spring, WV; two grandchildren: Dean Seldon and Renea Burkholder; four great-grandchildren: John Seldon, DJ Burkholder, Lincoln Burkholder and Griffin Burkholder.

He is preceded in death by one son: David E. Seldon; four brothers: Marvin, Melvin, Lester and Elray Seldon; one sister: Vivian Swisher.

Kenneth will be sorely missed.

 

The Club Treasurer stated that $6,013 had been returned to the community in 2011.  Also, the Veteran's Day Breakfast held on November 12th served 75, with 35 of those being veterans. The club held a drawing to award 10 American flags to participating veterans.  The club also stuffed 154 Christmas stockings for the troops overseas.
