About Us

The Capon Valley Ruritan Club was co-founded in 1985 by Capon Bridge Ruritan members Roy S. Giffin and Glen Davis.  The strategy for forming the club was for Roy to contact older members of the community and Glen to contact younger members of the community and his relatives to invite them to attend the first organizational meeting held at the Capon Valley Rod and Gun Club building.

At the organizational meeting, attended by thirty men from the surrounding community, a full slate of officers was elected prior to the club ever being chartered by Ruritan National.  This was a testament to the desire of the community not only to form a Ruritan Club, but to become active in the community as quickly as possible.  During the first year of the club's existence, board meetings were held in Charles Davis's home with Glen Davis serving as the sponsoring club's representative, to help steer the officers in the right direction.  Those charter officers and members had a vision for serving the community at those initial meetings that continues to thrive today.

The Club is a chapter of Ruritan National (www.ruritan.org/2_about_ruritan.htm). Although it has a national affiliation, the Club is dedicated to the needs of the Capon Valley community and works to meet some of these needs by:

In our Ruritan Student Program, our club provides for the membership of middle and high school students by paying their membership (including meals) for one year. The purpose of the Ruritan Student Program is to introduce students of all ages to the Ruritan spirit of Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service

The Capon Valley Ruritan Club has its own building located on River Road one-half mile from State Road 259 in Yellow Spring, WV. Although the facility was built primarily for Ruritan events, it is used for many other community events such as twice weekly seniors' lunches, elections, and the Capon Valley 50k Run. The building can also be rented to members of the community for special occasions.
